Home Insurance Savings:
How to Get the Right Cover at the Lowest Cost

Home insurance is probably one of the most important things we ever buy for our home (even if it is hardly the most exciting one). After all, think what would happen if your home was damaged by a fire, if you were burgled, or even if a double decker bus ran into your wall! With even a cheap house insurance policy in place, you would be covered as the insurance company would help make things right. Without any form of home insurance there would be nobody left to pay for the damage but you.

The problem that many of us experience when buying house insurance is how to get the right kind of cover without paying over the odds for it. After all, most of us won't ever need to make a claim on our insurance policy so it makes sense to keep premium payments as low as possible. So, how can you find the best cheap house insurance?

Tips on cutting home insurance costs

  • Buy in bulk: Buying buildings and contents insurance as two separate policies may cost more than buying them together from one insurer. Tell the insurer that you will take out both policies and you will probably get a discount.

  • Buy online: Most insurance companies will give you a percentage discount on your home insurance costs if you buy online.

  • Buy what you need: The higher your insurance levels, the more you pay, so make sure to work out exactly what levels of house insurance cover you need. Don't be tempted to go over the top as you'll simply have higher premiums to pay. But, do be realistic and don't be tempted to under-insure yourself. Under-insuring your buildings or contents could actually invalidate a claim.

  • Buy the right features: Many house insurance policies will come with additional features that you can buy on top of your base cover (although some policies may put these features in as standard). If additional features are offered as optional extras then you'll have to pay additional costs to get the home insurance cover. So, think about how likely you are to make a claim on these house insurance features before paying for them. For example, freezer cover (which pays for the contents of your freezer if you have a problem that defrosts it and ruins what's inside) is not worth paying extra for if all you ever have in your freezer is a bag of peas and a tub of ice-cream!

  • Buy where you like: Unless your mortgage provider insists on your buying home insurance with them as part of a special mortgage deal, don't automatically assume that taking out their policies will be the best way to cheap house insurance. Shop around!

  • Buy peace of mind: Insurance is all about risk. If you can prove to a home insurance company that you have taken specific measures to make your property secure (such as window locks and an alarm for example), then they will know that you are less likely to be burgled easily and you may qualify for a security discount.

Do make sure to read through the terms and conditions of the home insurance policy in which you are interested before signing up for anything. Getting the right house insurance is all about getting a cheap house insurance policy that gives you adequate cover to help you out financially if something goes wrong. Don't think that paying over the odds for home insurance will give you better coverage and don't assume that cheap house insurance won't give the right levels of protection. Find the house insurance policies with the cover that you actually need and then find the best cost home insurance option to suit your budget.
