Motorcycle insurance

Motorcycle Insurance:
What to Look For in a Policy

If you are looking for insurance for motorbikes, insurance for scooters, or insurance for mopeds, then the best way to get the right cover is to look for a motorcycle insurance policy that handles your actual biking needs.

Not all insurance for motorbikes, insurance for scooters, and insurance for mopeds policies are the same - they may come with different costs, features, terms, and conditions.

Understanding how motorcycle insurance policies work

There are three primary types of motorcycle insurance policies from which to choose:

  1. Third party policies:  These motorcycle insurance policies give you insurance cover against incidents where you cause harm or damage to another person or to someone's property. You won't be able to make any claims on damage caused to you or your bike in any way.

  2. Third party fire and theft policies:  These motorcycle insurance policies give the same coverage as basic third party ones, but they add cover against fire and theft to the mix. So, with this kind of policy, you are insured against your bike being stolen or set on fire. You still won't be able to claim if you get injured or if your bike gets damaged in an accident.

  3. Comprehensive policies:  These motorcycle insurance policies give you a fuller range of cover. So, you will get third party and fire and theft cover, but you will also get help if your bike is damaged or if you get hurt in an accident.

As you might expect, the costs of motorcycle insurance rise as you get more cover.

Extra features and benefits of motorcycle insurance

You won't generally find any added features with third party/third party fire and theft policies, but you may well get them with comprehensive insurance for motorbikes, insurance for scooters, and insurance for mopeds. The actual features that you are offered will not necessarily come with every comprehensive policy; some will come as standard and some may incur an extra premium.

Typical motorcycle insurance examples here include:

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover that allows you to ride somebody else's bike under your own insurance.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover that includes modifications to your ride; not all policies will cover modifications so if you have some or plan on adding them, then check that a policy will allow them.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover for travel outside of the UK.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover for breakdown rescue.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover for equipment such as helmets and leathers.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover for legal costs.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover for personal belongings.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover that allows you to insure more than one bike, scooter, or moped at the same time.

  • Insurance for motorbikes cover that replaces your bike if it is lost or stolen or if it is damaged to such an extent that repairs are not cost effective.

Also, bear in mind that if you ride a specialist or high performance bike, then you may need a specialist motorcycle insurance policy as some general ones may not cover you. Some may give cover within a standard policy, but you may have to pay a little extra.

Every bike rider will have different needs from his/her motorcycle insurance. At the bare minimum, you need insurance for motorbikes that gives you third party cover that protects other people. But, this kind of insurance for motorbikes, insurance for scooters, and insurance for mopeds won't help you out financially if you get injured in an accident or if your bike needs repair.

So, if these issues are important to you and you think that you'll need financial assistance from your motorcycle insurance if they happen then look for more comprehensive cover. The same goes for insurance for scooters and insurance for mopeds.
