Cat insurance

A Beginner's Guide to Cat Insurance

Cat owners certainly do love their cats, but, ask any of them and they'll tell you that they hate having to pay vet bills! If your cat falls ill, has an accident, or gets injured, then the cost of medical care and treatment may well cost you hundreds (if not thousands!) of pounds. As a result, more and more cat owners are opting to take out cat health insurance or cat illness protection policies. This kind of insurance for cats will help you cover medical and other costs, so you can get your cat better without worrying about money.

There are a lot of options when it comes to buying cat insurance. At the very least, you should expect a cat health insurance or cat illness protection scheme to cover the costs of medical treatment in the event of an accident, illness, or injury. But, even standard insurance for cats may offer a range of other benefits.

Cat policy features and benefits

Not all cat insurance policies will offer exactly the same benefits, and in general terms, the more benefits you get, the higher your insurance costs will be. As well as medical coverage for illness, injury, and accident, you may also find the following features and benefits useful:

  • Alternative treatments:  Some cat insurance policies will allow you to swap standard medical treatments with alternative remedies. Or, they may give you an allowance for using specific alternative treatments if you prefer them to standard treatments or want to use them in tandem.

  • Loss of the cat:  If you lose your cat or if it is stolen, then you may want to advertise to see if you can get it back. Many cat insurance policies will, therefore, offer you a cash sum to help with advertising costs and/or a reward for the return of your cat. If you do not recover your cat, some insurance for cats policies may also pay for you to replace it which can be useful if you own an expensive breed.

  • Death of the cat:  Some cat health insurance policies will give you cover for the death of your cat. This could, for example, take the form of a death lump sum payment, a payment that covers replacement or money towards cremation/funeral costs. Some cat health insurance plans will also offer bereavement help lines to help you deal with the death of your pet.

  • Boarding costs:  It's quite common nowadays for cat illness protection to also cover boarding costs if you need to put your cat in a cattery in an emergency situation.

  • Legal liability:  If your cat damages property or injures another person, then you could be liable for costs. If your insurance for cats includes legal liability or 'third party' liability as it is sometimes known then you will have protection against this.

  • Holiday costs:  Not everyone takes their cat on holiday but some people do! Cat health insurance cover here will help you out if your cat gets hurt or ill on holiday. And, some policies will also give you costs towards coming home if you are on holiday and your cat falls ill at home.

  • Multiple discounts:  If you have more than one cat then insuring them all at the same time could save you money as you may qualify for discounts.

Things to watch out for with cat insurance

There are also a few clauses and conditions to watch out for before you buy cat health insurance or cat illness protection. For example:

  • Not all insurance for cats will cover all breeds. Some expensive or rare breeds may need cover given via a specialist cat insurance policy.

  • Not all cat health insurance plans will cover a cat for life. Some may stop once the cat reaches a certain age. So, look for a policy that will give cover for life.

  • Not all cat illness protection will cover existing medical conditions or hereditary illnesses. You may have to pay a premium or a higher excess to get cover here in your insurance for cats.

Finally, remember to shop around for cat insurance quotes before buying any insurance for cats policy. This will help you get the best cat illness protection policy at the lowest cost.
