Pet insurance

Pet Insurance Checklist:
What to Look for in Affordable Pet Care

Buying pet health insurance is something that few pet owners can afford not to do nowadays. If your pet falls ill or has an accident, then the costs of vet bills can run into hundreds or thousands of pounds, but if you take out insurance for pets then you can technically avoid having to meet these costs yourself.

That said, not all pet insurance policies are equal, so you do need to compare pet health insurance quotes before you sign up to any policy to make sure that you get the cover you need. In an ideal world, you want an affordable pet care policy that gives you financial help when you need it and that won't leave you out of pocket. So, what should you be looking out for to get the right insurance for pets cover at an affordable cost?

The Dos and Don'ts of Choosing Pet Care Policies

  • Do buy the right pet insurance policy for your pet: Many policies will be designed for specific pets, and costs may rise for more exotic or rare animals. So, if you have a cat, for example, then look for a policy that covers feline issues. You'll get cheaper cover that should cover all your needs.

  • Don't assume that your pet is covered: If you buy a general pet health insurance policy, then don't assume it covers all animals. If you have a rare exotic pet, for example, it may be excluded under the terms of a standard policy. So, you'll be paying out for nothing here.

  • Do check for claim limitsThese kinds of pet insurance policies will usually come with one or more types of claim limits. So, for example, a policy may give you cover for a specific treatment up to a certain monetary value after which you will have to pay. Or, a policy may give you cover for a specific condition or illness for a certain period of time (i.e. for 12 months) after which point you will have to pay for further treatment.

  • Don't assume you get cover for everything: Most pet insurance policies won't give you cover for routine or standard appointments or treatments. So, for example, you cannot make a claim when you have your dog wormed or your cat de-flead.

  • Do think about your liability: Liability cover is built into many insurance for pets policies. This feature will give you legal help if your pet damages somebody's property or hurts someone. This is a very useful benefit if you own a boisterous dog!

  • Don't ignore the age of your pet: Check that any affordable pet care policy will cover your pet for life. Many insurance for pets plans will only treat animals up to a certain age and then they won't give cover. And, as you might expect, pets will have potentially more problems as they grow older so this isn't much use to you then.

Getting the right pet insurance cover at lowest cost

Once you know what you need from pet insurance then you can start shopping around to get some affordable pet care quotes. The more pet health insurance policies you look at, the more insurance for pets quotes you will be given which makes it a lot easier to find affordable pet care. So, don't just look at one or two insurance for pets companies; go online and have a search engine trawl for you to see what quotes are like.

Bear in mind that some pet insurance features that are offered in pet health insurance policies may not be of any use to you. You may not, for example, need the feature that will give you money for advertising/a reward if your old moggie goes missing, but it may be worthwhile if you own a rare (and expensive) feline! So, pick and choose the pet health insurance features as they suit you. This will help you find affordable pet care and it will also ensure that you get the right features and benefits when you choose which insurance for pets policy to go with.
